In this article, we will guide you through the science behind omega-3 fatty acids and why including this micronutrient in your diet may help you achieve your health goals.
Cardiovascular health
Omega-3 fatty acids have a long history with cardiovascular health. In fact, they have been recommended by the American Heart Association for the last 20 years as a mean to reduce dangerous cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or a stroke.
In a 2019 double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the effect of omega-3 supplementation on patients at increased risk of ischaemic events (when blood flow is restricted to certain organs) was studied and the results were staggering. Among patients who had elevated triglyceride levels and were using statins, the death rate due to cardiovascular events was significantly lowered in those who received 2g of icosapent ethyl (the two main components of omega-3 is icosapent ethyl and alpha-linolenic acid) than those receiving placebo.
Furthermore, according to a 2014 meta-review on omega-3 fatty acids published in the American Journal of Hypertension, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids were found to lower blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure in the group receiving EPA and DHA was lowered by 1.52mm Hg compared to the placebo group, and by 0.99mm Hg for diastolic blood pressure.
Overall, the research regarding health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is promising but inconclusive as other more important factors may be at play and more studies are needed for scientists to gain a better understanding of the micronutrient’s impact on the body.
Brain function
The impact of omega-3 fatty acids on brain function has also been documented, and we have previously talked about the potential benefits omega-3 may have on your brain. Click here to read our post on boosting your brain function through a few easy steps!

Omega-3 also has a long history with being used to prevent and treat eye disease. This 2019 study, particularly, showed the positive role omega-3 supplementation may have on treating dry eye disease. Similar studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and glaucoma.
